About
Built for renters who care about good coffee
apartmentespresso is an independent review site for espresso machines tested specifically against apartment constraints — counter footprint, noise levels, no plumbing, and standard 110 V outlets. No house kitchens, no built-in grinders we can't move, no $5,000 prosumer machines that need their own counter slab.
Why this site exists
Most espresso machine reviews are written for people with full kitchens and 60 cm+ of free counter. That's not most renters. The standard apartment kitchen module is 60 cm wide. After a microwave, toaster, and a knife block, you're working with 30-40 cm of usable counter. Add a grinder and the espresso machine has to fit a single 20-25 cm slot.
None of the existing review sites measure footprint against this benchmark. They publish dimensions but don't render them on a real apartment counter. They don't filter for "won't wake the partner at 6 AM" or "doesn't need 220 V" or "renter can take it with them when the lease ends." That's the gap this site fills.
What we do differently
- Apt-Fit Score — every machine gets a 0-10 score based on footprint (60% weight), plumbing-free (binary), renter-safe (binary), and noise estimate. Real footprints rendered as SVG diagrams on a 60 cm counter slice. Full methodology →
- Real-Reddit triad — every review pulls top-voted comments from r/espresso threads about that specific machine. Currently 933 comments analyzed across 81 threads. We quote the user, link the thread, show upvote count and date.
- Expert reviewer voices — full transcripts of YouTube reviews from credible reviewers (Lance Hedrick, James Hoffmann, Whole Latte Love, Tom's Coffee Corner, Alternative Brewing). Pull-quotes embedded with source citation and link.

Solo operator. Pulling espresso shots in apartments since 2018 — currently a 35 m² studio with a 24" cabinet kitchen. Six espresso machines have lived on that counter over the years, three have been returned because they didn't actually fit. The frustration of buying a "compact" machine that turns out to dominate your entire counter is what started this site.
Not a barista or coffee industry professional — a coffee enthusiast solving a problem I had personally, and writing about what I find for other apartment dwellers in the same boat.
Editorial independence & affiliate disclosure
This site uses affiliate links to Amazon Associates and direct retailers (Whole Latte Love, Seattle Coffee Gear, Best Buy, etc.). When you buy through these links, we earn a small commission — never changes the price you pay.
Important: we bought every machine on this site ourselves before joining any affiliate program. No machine on this list was given to us by a manufacturer. No "honest paid review" content. No "sponsored" anything. If we ever start reviewing manufacturer-supplied units, that arrangement will be disclosed at the top of the specific review.

What this site is NOT
- A barista training resource — see Lance Hedrick or James Hoffmann for that
- A coffee bean review site — we're machine-focused
- A house-kitchen blog — if you have 60+ cm of free counter, you have more options than what we cover here
- An "everything is great" affiliate site — we publish negative scores when machines deserve them
